A Message to Customers, Climbers, Competitors and Contributors
From Boulders Climbing Gym Society Chair, Kimanda Jarzebiak
Hi Everyone!
I don’t think I can be at the Boulders (or any climbing event, really) without being asked the million dollar question: when will the expansion open?
The answer varies, but usually includes the response “not soon enough for me!”.
There is good news today, and delayed news. Construction has started again! The daylighting panels that comprise a significant portion of the outside of the building have finally arrived on site (apparently, inanimate objects have a poor sense of direction). Installation has started, which means we should soon thereafter be getting electricity, and then drywalling, and then painting…
The wall itself is complete – it has passed its engineering inspection. Route setting is about 75% done (and they are amazing routes – can’t wait for everyone to try them).
However, my general contractor tells me that it would be pushing things to have an occupancy permit in time for the October 29th competition, but believes we will be substantially complete by October 31st. Likely, we will be having a soft opening in early November (stay tuned! I promise I will let you know as soon as I do!).
I have therefore decided to postpone the official opening, fundraiser and sanctioned adult and youth lead competition. We are moving it to Saturday December 10 (thanks Luigi!). This new date also hopefully will allow people like Sean McColl (who is currently in Europe) the ability to come and send at the comp.
To everyone who had booked travel to the event, I apologize profusely. It is a great thing I was clueless about how hard it would be for a volunteer-driven not-for-profit society to build a world class competition climbing facility in a public high school, or I may have not started at all. That said, the next time I tell you that I have a brilliant idea, it might be a good idea to send me on a beach vacation in Mexico until the motivation fades away.
Thank you all for your patience and continued support. I am excited about the fundraiser, the competition, the opening ceremony…. and definitely, some sort of after-party. If you can help with any of these things, please let me know. We still need a wee bit more money! ;)
Best,
Kimanda
